This is the most important ore of iron. Hematite possesses the strange quality of healing itself. Make a small scratch on the surface of the stone, and then rub your finger over it. The scratch may disappear. To the ancients, the name hematite was applied to what we now know as bloodstone. When scraped, hematite produces a blood red powder. Today, hematite is often faceted and sold and marcasite.
