Description
Selenite is the transparent variety of gypsum. There is also smooth fibrous, aggregate form of gypsum known as satin spar. Alabaster, meanwhile, is a fine-grained massive variety of gypsum that is used as an ornamental stone. Another form, desert rose, is a brown flower-shaped variety of the mineral. Gypsum is one of the more common minerals in sedimentary environments. About 75% of the gypsum extracted from the earth is used in plaster of Paris, the white cementing material used to set broken bones. Selenite is easily chipped and is damaged if exposed to water.
