Magnesite is used in the manufacture of bricks for furnace linings and is a source of magnesia in chemicals and pharmaceuticals. A carbonate of magnesium, magnesite has the same molecular and crystal structure as calcite. Magnesite is soft and porous, so it cannot be cleaned with liquids. It is also very brittle and sensitive to heat.
