Description

Tourmaline is primarily a mineral group of high temperatures and pressures forming in igneous and metamorphic rocks. Commonly in prismatic crystals, sometimes very large (up to a yard / 1 m long and several inches wide. Cross sections are usually nearly triangular. Tourmaline is pyroelectric (becomes strongly charged electrically on heating and cooling) and piezoelectric (rapidly becomes charged in response to pressure). Black tourmaline (schorl) is not considered to have gem value, however other tourmalines are valued as a gem material - top-quality stones are among the worlds more precious gemstones. The most valuable tourmaline is elbaite, a lithium rich form that may appear in a variety of colors. Of all gemstones, tourmaline has the largest range of colors.
