Description
Formed from particularly sticky, viscous molten lava, rhyolite's gray, brown, or reddish color often darkens with age. Rhyolite is a hard flinty rock that breaks to give sharp edges. Many rhyolite deposits still bear visible signs of their liquefied origins - they have round, mineral filled cavities and hollow sacs, which are the solidified remains of what were once bubbles in a solution. The most vesicular forms of rhyolite may be classified as pumice. The essential mineralogical components of rhyolite are feldspar, mica, and quartz. Rhyolite often appears in prominent swirling layers of different colors and grain types - this phenomenon is known as flow banding.
